What to look for under the hood
- Reputable brand. Samsung, WD/SanDisk, Crucial, Kingston, Lexar, Solidigm, Seagate — proven controllers and firmware.
- TLC over QLC. Better endurance and steadier write speed; QLC is fine for cold storage but slows on long writes.
- DRAM cache (or solid HMB). Helps sustained performance; the cheapest DRAM-less drives stutter under heavy writes.
- Heatsink for Gen5. Gen5 runs hot and can throttle — use a board or drive heatsink.
How to choose
- Gaming: a 2TB Gen4 TLC drive from a known brand. Plenty fast, best value.
- Creator / mixed: 2-4TB Gen4, or Gen5 if you move huge files daily.
- Local AI: 4TB+ for model libraries and datasets; Gen5 helps load times, Gen4 saves money.

Gen4 or Gen5 NVMe for gaming?
Gen4. Game load times stop improving past roughly 5,000 MB/s, which Gen4 already clears, so extra Gen5 speed does almost nothing for games. Spend the difference on more capacity instead. Gen5 earns its premium only for sustained large-file work — loading big AI datasets and model weights, 8K video, or heavy content creation.
How much SSD capacity do I need?
2TB is the gaming sweet spot, since a handful of modern titles fill 1TB fast. For local AI, go to 4TB or 8TB so model weights and datasets live on fast NVMe rather than slow disk. The 2TB tier usually has the best dollars-per-TB right now; 4TB and 8TB carry a per-TB premium during the shortage but are worth it for AI capacity.
TLC vs QLC, and does a DRAM cache matter?
Prefer TLC NAND over QLC for endurance and steady write speed. A DRAM cache (or solid host memory buffer support) helps sustained performance; budget DRAM-less QLC drives slow down on long writes. Reputable mid-range and high-end drives are TLC with good caching.
Do Gen5 SSDs need a heatsink?
Generally yes. Gen5 drives run hot under load and can thermal-throttle without a heatsink. Many motherboards include an M.2 heatsink, or buy the heatsink version of the drive. Gen4 drives are cooler and usually fine bare.
Are cheap no-name SSDs safe?
