For gaming, Gen4. Game load times stop improving past roughly 5,000 MB/s, which Gen4 already exceeds, so the smarter spend is more capacity at Gen4 prices. Gen5 (up to ~14,000 MB/s) is worth it for sustained large-file work — loading big AI datasets and model weights, video, or heavy content creation.

Why are SSDs so expensive in 2026?

NAND flash is in a deep shortage — makers prioritized capacity for AI datacenters. Raw NAND is up roughly 4-5× since mid-2025, pushing finished drive prices up ~2-3×: a 2TB NVMe that was $120-150 a year ago now runs $250-480. Analysts do not expect real relief before late 2027, so $/TB is the number to watch and buying on a dip matters.

What SSD capacity do I need for AI and gaming?

2TB is the gaming sweet spot (a few large games fill 1TB fast). For local AI, go bigger — 4TB or 8TB — since model weights and datasets are large and you want them on fast NVMe, not spinning disk. The 4TB tier currently has the best $/TB.

Are cheap no-name SSDs worth it?
