What's inside a WD My Book

Internally, My Book uses the same family of WD white-label drives as the Elements — at 12 TB and above these are typically helium, 7200-class CMR mechanisms (WD's NAS-grade white-label drives). The 8 TB white-label is CMR too but a slower, 5400-class unit. The exact model varies by capacity and manufacture date.

The hardware-encryption catch

The one real difference from the Elements: My Book's USB-to-SATA bridge performs hardware encryption. The encryption key lives on the bridge board, not the platters. In practice that means:

A shucked My Book drive works fine as a fresh, reformatted SATA drive.
You cannot read data that was already written through the enclosure once you remove it — the bridge held the key. Move any existing data off first, then shuck and reformat.

Plan to reformat. Treat a shucked My Book as a blank drive. If you only want simple plug-and-play shucking, the WD Elements is the easier choice.

How to shuck a My Book

Like the Elements, the case is clip-held with no screws — work a pry tool around the seam, separate the shell, and unplug the bridge board. Watch for the 3.3V pin issue on first power-up (see below).

The 3.3V pin (PWDIS) fix

If a shucked WD drive won't spin up, it's almost always the SATA power pin 3 (3.3V / PWDIS) signal. Use a Molex-to-SATA power adapter (Molex omits the 3.3V line) or mask pin 3 with a sliver of Kapton tape.

Can you shuck a WD My Book?

Yes. The My Book enclosure pops open along its clips like the Elements, and the drive inside is a standard 3.5-inch SATA drive. The difference is the USB bridge does hardware encryption, so the shuck is a little more involved than an Elements.

Does My Book hardware encryption stop you using the bare drive?

No — once shucked and reformatted, the bare drive works as a normal SATA drive. What you cannot do is read data that was already written through the My Book enclosure after you remove that enclosure, because the bridge held the encryption key. Always plan to reformat a shucked My Book.

Are WD My Book drives CMR?

At 8 TB and above, My Book ships the same class of WD white-label CMR drives as the Elements line. Exact models vary by capacity and date.

Does the 3.3V pin issue affect My Book drives?
