What's inside a WD Elements Desktop

WD Elements Desktop drives ship with WD "white-label" drives — the same class of mechanism WD sells under its own NAS-grade labels, just without the retail sticker. At 12 TB and above these are typically helium-filled, 7200-class CMR drives; the 8 TB white-label is CMR too but a slower, 5400-class unit (air-filled on some newer revisions). The exact model and firmware vary by capacity and manufacture date, so treat the contents as "white-label CMR" rather than a guaranteed specific model.

Smaller capacities are the exception: some 2 TB and 6 TB runs have shipped as SMR (shingled), which performs poorly under the sustained random writes of a NAS rebuild. For shucking into a NAS or RAID array, stick to 12 TB and up, where the drives are CMR.

Is the WD Elements shuckable? (Yes)

The Elements enclosure has no screws — it's held by plastic clips along the seam. Work a thin plastic pry tool or guitar pick around the edge and the case splits open, then disconnect the small USB-to-SATA bridge board. The drive inside is a standard 3.5-inch SATA drive you can mount in any PC, NAS or DAS.

Warranty: opening the enclosure voids the external drive's warranty, and the bare drive may carry limited or no separate coverage. Shuck only if you're comfortable with that trade-off.

The 3.3V pin (PWDIS) gotcha

The one thing that trips up first-time shuckers: some WD drives implement the SATA power pin 3 (3.3V / PWDIS) reset signal. With certain modern power supplies that drive the 3.3V line, the disk simply won't spin up. Two fixes:

CMR vs SMR — why it matters for shucking

CMR drives handle random writes and RAID/ZFS rebuilds predictably. SMR drives overlap tracks to gain density and can stall badly under sustained random writes, which is why they're discouraged for NAS arrays. The shuckable WD Elements at 12 TB+ are CMR, which is what makes them a safe NAS choice.

Shucking is usually well cheaper per terabyte than buying the equivalent bare internal drive.
