WD Elements vs Seagate Expansion

Updated June 2026

The two go-to Amazon shucks, head to head. Both give you cheap CMR storage — the right pick comes down to current $/TB and a couple of quirks. Here's how they compare.

Quick verdict

WD Elements is the safer, better-documented shuck: white-label CMR across all the 12 TB+ sizes, with the most community results behind it. Seagate Expansion is frequently a bit cheaper and perfectly good at the larger capacities, but demands more care about SMR at small sizes. Neither is a bad choice — when both are available, buy whichever has the better live $/TB.

WD Elements vs Seagate Expansion FAQ

Is WD Elements or Seagate Expansion better for shucking?

Both are solid. WD Elements is the more predictable, best-documented shuck — white-label CMR across 12 TB+ with huge community coverage. Seagate Expansion is often a little cheaper and fine at the larger capacities, but you have to be more careful about SMR at small sizes. When both are in stock, let live $/TB decide.

Which has fewer shucking headaches?

WD Elements is more documented, but WD drives are the ones more likely to hit the 3.3V power-pin issue on first boot (an easy Molex-adapter or Kapton-tape fix). Seagate drives rarely hit that pin issue. Both enclosures are clip-held with no screws.

Are both CMR?

At the capacities worth shucking (12 TB+ for WD Elements, 16 TB+ for Seagate Expansion) both are CMR. Avoid the small Seagate Expansion sizes, where SMR has appeared.
